Description

To provide technical expertise and support to WHO's nutrition programs and initiatives in Pakistan by contributing to the development, implementation, and monitoring of WHO's nutrition programs with a particular focus on addressing malnutrition and improving nutrition outcomes in vulnerable populations.


The programme Officer Nutrition will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including government counterparts, partner organizations, and other relevant stakeholders, to ensure the effective delivery of nutrition interventions aligned with WHO's strategic priorities and global health targets. Under the direct supervision of the NPO (Nutrition) and the overall supervision of the Cluster Lead, the incumbent shall undertake the following duties:


  • Provide technical guidance and support in the development, implementation, and monitoring of nutrition programs and initiatives in Pakistan, in line with WHO's strategic priorities and global health targets.
  • Collaborate with government counterparts, partner organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure the effective coordination and implementation of nutrition interventions at the national and sub-national levels in Pakistan.
  • Support the development and dissemination of technical guidelines, tools, and resources related to nutrition, and provide technical advice and capacity building to government counterparts and partners.
  • Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of nutrition programs and initiatives and participate in assessments and surveys to gather data on nutrition indicators and outcomes in Pakistan.
  • Support advocacy efforts to promote the importance of nutrition in improving health outcomes and reducing malnutrition and engage in relevant policy and advocacy forums at national and sub-national levels in Pakistan.
  • Provide technical support in emergency response situations, including rapid assessments, planning, and coordination of nutrition interventions in humanitarian settings in Pakistan.
  • Support resource mobilization efforts for nutrition programs, including proposal development, donor reporting, and partnership building.
  • Assist in capacity building of the professional competencies and capacities of the national stair of the nutrition departments and service providers in growth monitoring, baby friendly hospital initiative, Infant and young child feeding, community management of acute malnutrition and Inpatient treatment of SAM children with complications as well as interventions in addressing overweight and obesity issues in Pakistan.
  • Assist the planning, implementation and reporting of nutrition interventions including nutrition surveillance through monitoring of project activities and ensuring that resources are utilized in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Coordinate with other UN agencies and stakeholders to ensure complementarity of the nutrition response.
  • Collect and keep proper and updated record of all nutrition therapeutic supplies, medicines and equipment provided to Nutrition Stabilization Centers.
  • Represent WHO in all relevant nutrition fora.

Functional knowledge and skills:

  • Strong technical expertise in nutrition, including knowledge of maternal and child nutrition, food security, and related public health issues.
  • Excellent analytical, communication and writing skills with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences in a clear and concise manner.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural, multidisciplinary team and to establish and maintain effective partnerships with government counterparts, partner organisations and other stakeholders

Education:

  • University degree in a health-related field (medicine, nursing)/or nutrition is required.
  • Advanced training in management of severe acute malnutrition with complications, infant and young child feeding and nutrition surveillance is desirable.
  • A master’s degree in public health/community medicine/ nursing or related field will be an asset.

Experience:

  • Two years of relevant experience. Experience/training in organizing and executing nutrition programmes and working with UN will be an asset.
  • Experience in emergency response and humanitarian settings, including rapid assessments, planning, and coordination of nutrition interventions in complex emergencies.

Languages:

  • Excellent knowledge of English, Urdu and local languages.

Duration and Location:

  • The Programme Officer for Nutrition will be based at the WHO country office in Pakistan, with occasional travel to project sites and other locations within the country as required.
  • The initial contract will be for a duration of 1 year, with possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability
